Foul Play
The Gros Islet Fire Station was on the weekend called to extinguish a blaze which took place right next door.
Hilton Oculien, the fire department's public relations officer, says investigations into the incident which arose in the wee hours of Sunday morning(May 4th), point to arson.
"Sunday morning about 2:10 we were called to a fire adjacent to our station, the Blue Lagoon Guest House. Upon response, the firemen attacked a fire that was in the laundry area of that building. However, investigations revealed that a second fire set in the building, in the store room, and that was already extinguished by the residence before the arrival of the fire appliance. This suggests that the fire was deliberately set."
The Gros-Islet police have been called in to investigate the matter.
Mr. Oculien notes that the frequency of fires and their location have raised the suspicion of arson in the minds of the fire service and as a result they have teamed up with the police to flush out the cause.
"In the past two to three weeks, there have been three unusual fires calls in the Gros-Islet area where apparently the fires were deliberately set; an apartment in Rodney Bay, a dwelling house in Bonterre and a car rental. So the Gros-Islet Police have met with the fire service and the police have increased their vigilance in patrols and most likely, this latest incident will cause us to meet again to look at other strategies we can implement."
