Man who chops ex-girlfriend receives 8 years

 

Matta Joseph of Canaries who pleaded guilty to chopping his ex-girlfriend was earlier today sentenced to 8 years in prison.

 

According to the facts relayed by the prosecution at about 10:30am on Friday June 12, 2009, Juliette Mauricette, Joseph’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his three children, was on her way to work at the Lime in Rodney Bay.

 

While walking past KFC at the Rodney Bay Mall, Joseph chopped Mauricette with a cutlass on various parts of her body which included, her neck, head, face, shoulder, arms and both hands.

Following Joseph’s attack, Mauricette was taken to Victoria Hospital by ambulance where she was treated and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for one month.

 

Mauricette was in a relationship with Joseph for 11 years but ended it in April 2009, due to its abusive nature.

 

According to a medical report, the probable effects of the injuries would be bilateral visual impairment, partial handicap due to injuries on both hands.

 

Prior to his arrest on October 9, 2009, Joseph was on the run for about three months.

 

He was initially charged on two counts- a first count of attempted and a second count of Dangerous Harm.

 

Joseph pleaded guilty to the latter upon his first court appearance and was relieved of the attempted murder charge.
