Many Hands

The month of many observances begins today with October designated as Creole Heritage Month, and Financial Literacy Month.

It is also Cancer Awareness Month and the month when one of Saint Lucia's two flower festivals, La Marguerite, will be celebrated on the 17th.

For many, October is the month when Saint Lucia's most popular cultural festival, Jounen Kweyol, will be celebrated on Sunday October 26th.

Jounen Kweyol marks the festive observance of International Creole Day on October 28th around the world but for convenience the festivities are held on the Sunday closest to that date.

The communities of Canaries, Micoud, Piaye and Grande Riviere-Gros Islet have been chosen as the venue so this year's Jounen Kweyol celebrations.

Meanwhile today is International Day for Older Persons, and the theme for this year is Rights of Older Persons.

The occasion will be marked by an ecumenical service at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception at 9:30 this morning, followed by a reception at the Castries Town Hall.
