St. Lucia People's Movement (LPM) is the island's newest party
LPM announced its formation one week after the Opposition Labour Party members picked former Prime Minister, Dr. Kenny Anthony to lead them into the next general elections.
LPM said it plans to give the St Lucian electorate a decent and credible alternative at the polls come the next general election, constitutionally due in December, 2011.
The Party is spearheaded by the two men who recently resigned from the ruling United Workers Party; Therold Prudent and Franklin McDonald.
Dr S Julian Best, a former UWI economics lecturer and Professor at Medgar Evers College in New York, is the third co-chairperson.
There are reportedly several female members of the party.
The LPM has chosen the bell as its party symbol and green as its rallying colour.
Interim Chairman, Franklin McDonald explained that the party chose the bell as its symbol because the time has come for the leaders of St. Lucia to summon the youth to action, to summon their spirit, their courage and their strength to work for a better and more peaceful St Lucia.
He said, The Saint Lucia Peoples Movement, will be ringing the bell for change, for freedom, for respect, good governance and democracy all over St Lucia.
Interim Co-chairman, Prudent, explained that the party chose green because it is one color that does not run. And the LPM does not intend to run away from any issue, discussion, debate or challenge. The party will talk to, debate, and work with any group, organization, and all persons of goodwill who are willing to promote the cause of changing the social and economic landscape of this country.
The Movement is scheduled to launch its website today, in which it explains its aims, hopes and goals for a better and more prosperous St Lucia.
Prudent said the party will be launched in the soonest possible time.
