ANOTHER WIN FOR ST.LUCIA IN SENIORS CRICKET FESTIVAL

 

The 3rd round of matches of the 7th International Seniors Cricket Festival concluded here yesterday, Sunday with BARBARIANS, SHROPSHIRE and SAINT LUCIA registering victories.

At the Gros Islet Playing Field, CANADA taking first knock totaled 192 for 8 from their allotted 35 overs. Checkley Thomas with a boundary-filled 67 and Awada Jaggernath (29) set the pace with 97 in the 15th over for the first wicket. The only other knock of note came from Eugene Soanes who retired hurt on 31. Extras were a healthy 34.

For SHROPSHIRE, Nigel Holl captured 2 for 27, while Dave Williams and Andy Parkyn took one wicket each.

When SHROPSHIRE replied they recovered from 68 for 5 to fashion an unlikely win by three wickets, mainly through the efforts of Brian Jones, who remained undefeated on 86. He received valuable support from Barry Jones (26), Matthew Whitthread (19), and Pete Holloway (16).

Final Scores: CANADA 192 for 8, SHROPSHIRE 193 for 7.

At the Beausejour Cricket Ground, BERKSHIRE batted first and made 147 for 6 with six batsmen reaching double figures. Christopher Harding topscored with 26, while Trevor Clacey (22), John Marston (17), Ronald Rock and Colin Ainger (15 each), and Donald Townsin (10) had useful knocks.

For Saint Lucia, Julian Charles finished with 2 for 18, while Brian Boxill, Joseph St. Marthe and Denis Pierre took one wicket each.

SAINT LUCIA with some of their better players sitting out this match, replied with 148 for 8 with 8.5 Overs to spare. Deldridge Flavius batting at No.8 scored 38. Julian Charles playing his first match in the Festival made 37, while Hermangild Francis and Augustus Didier contributed 16 each.

Alan Lacey was BERKSHIRE'S best bowler as he captured 4 for 29. The other wickets were shared amongst Trevor Clacey 2 for 29, John Branson 1 for 27 and Dennis Cryer 1 for 46.

Final Scores: BERKSHIRE 147 for 6; SAINT LUCIA 148 for 8.

 

The final match on the day saw BARBARIANS registering their first win in the Festival, when they comfortably defeated TRINIDAD & TOBAGO by 8 wickets.

Asked to bat first, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO, led by a controlled innings of 64 not out by Chanka Ramtahal, reached 179 for 6 from their allotted overs. Other good scores came from opener Patrick Oudit (32) and Errol Grant (36).

For BARBARIANS, Skipper Roland Cox was the best bowler with 3 for 38.

In reply, openers Nick Edmonson (40) and Denis Ryan (28) gave BARBARIANS an excellent start with a 52-run stand off just 9 Overs. From then on BARBARIANS never really looked like they were going to have any problem reaching their target as an unbeaten 75 from the in-form David Percival who won his second Player-of-the-Match Award, led his side to victory with five Overs to spare. Percival and Hensley Paul who made 31 not out had an unbroken 3rd wicket partnership of 77.

Final Scores: TRINIDAD & TOBAGO 179 for 6; BARBARIANS 181 for 2.

The Fourth round of matches takes place on Tuesday, March 11.
