INTERNATIONAL SENIORS CRICKET TOURNAMENT BOWLS OFF

 

The 7th International Seniors Cricket Festival organized by Gullivers Sports Travel bowled off here yesterday with matches at three venues.

At the Gros Islet Playing Field, Trinidad & Tobago defeated Berkshire of the United Kingdom by 87 runs. Batting first, Trinidad & Tobago totaled 246 for 6 off their allotted 35 overs. Man-of-the-Match,

E. Grant topscored with 54, while S. Brown (47), M. Johnity (46 not out), and S. Ramdass were the other main contributors.

Berkshire replied with 159 for 6 when their overs ran out. D. Townsin, their best batsman getting 44.

In an exciting encounter at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, Canada got the better of the Barbarians by 11 runs.

Canada took first knock and finished on 180 for 9. Their captain, John Vernueil, who was named Man-of-the-Match, hammered 73 which included 4 sixes and 5 fours. Other useful knocks came from Eugene Soanes (28), Neville McCollin (23), and Roy Pollard (13).

For the Barbarians, skipper Roland Cox picked up 2 for 30, David Percival 2 for 26, while Simon Anthony, Robin Pykett and Kenneth Charles took one wicket each.

In reply, Barbarians, who at the later stages of the match, seemed on course to victory, lost their last four wickets for 7 runs to be all out for 169. As with the bat, John Vernueil was the Canadians best performer with the ball taking 3 for 27. Berris Lodge and Eugene Soanes pick up 2 for 28 and 1 for 22 respectively.

In the other match of the day played at the Dennery Playing Field, Saint Lucia, led by Keith Charlery, defeated Shropshire of the United Kingdom by 102 runs.

Batting first, the local seniors rattled up 288 for 5 as Deldridge " Logie" Flavius set the ground ablaze with the first century of the Festival - 109 not out. Flavius received good support from Hermangile Francis (46), Keith Charlery (39), George St. Prix (29) and John Edwards (27).

For Shropshire David Williams finished with 2 for 37 and Nigel Holl 2 for 61.

When the English team replied they could only get to 186 for the loss of 8 wickets. Barry Jones batted well for 81 while David Street scored 51. Skipper Charlery was Saint Lucia's best bowler with 4 for 11.

The next series of matches take place on Thursday, March 6th at the same venues.
