ST.LUCIA PLAYS UNBEATEN IN INTERNATIONAL SENIORS CRICKET TOURNAMENT
The fourth and final round of matches in the 7th International Seniors Cricket Festival ended here yesterday with victories by Barbarians, Shropshire and Saint Lucia.
At the Gros Islet Playing Field, Barbarians won over Canada by 51 runs to register their second win in the Festival.
Batting first under overcast conditions, Barbarians, playing with one man short, were 67 for 6 at one stage before Robin Pykett (25), Kenneth Charles (21) and Melo Ram (12 not out) revived the innings which ended on 165 for 9 off 26.3 Overs. Earlier, David Percival with 26, Phil Manning (23) and Denis Ryan (15) made useful contributions.
For Canada, Clyde Glasgow, John Verneuil and Eugene Soanes picked up 2 for 24, 2 for 31 and 2 for 35 respectively. When Canada replied they were bowled out in the 25th Over for 114. Opener Checkley Thomas topscored with 39 while Roy Pollard and Mike Forde scored 16 and 14 respectively.
For the Barbarians, the wickets were shared by David Percival 3 for 16, Man-of-the Match Robin Pykett 2 for 21, Roland Cox 2 for 36 and Kenneth Charles 2 for 39.
Final Scores: Barbarians 165 for 9, Canada 114 all out.
Across at the Beausejour Cricket Ground, Shropshire had an 85-run victory over Berkshire who failed to gain a win in the Festival. Shropshire batted first and totaled 207 for 7 with John Hemmings, who made 77, and Matthew Whitthread, who scored 44, dominating the batting. John Branson with 2 for 49 had the best bowling figures for Berkshire. Berkshire were then restricted to 122 for 8 from their allotted 35 Overs by their UK counterparts. Dave Ashin 3 for 18, Jim Phillips 2 for 17, Nigel Holl 2 for 20 and David Williams were the wicket takers for Shropshire.
Final Scores: Shropshire 207 for 7; Berkshire 122 for 8.
At the Phillip Marcellin Ground in Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia defeated Trinidad & Tobago to remain the only unbeaten team in the Festival. Sent in, Trinidad & Tobago through the efforts of Errol Grant (41), Edward Marcelle (31), Sukeran Ramdras (24) and Stephen Brown (18) reached 165 before they were all out. Robertson Philgence 3 for 33, Joseph St. Marthe 2 for 27, Aubrey Johnny 2 for 39, Hermangild Francis 1 for 15 and John Edwards 1 for 35 shared the wickets for Saint Lucia.
In reply, an unbeaten century - 108 by Robertson Philgence paved the way for the local seniors easy victory in just 23 overs for the loss of three wickets. Philgence and George St. Prix (30) had an opening partnership of 88.
