Tile Depot Central Sports all-rounder, St Lucian Gary Mathurin was named the 2009 Eastern Credit Union National Premier League Cricketer of the Year during the league's awards ceremony at Eastern Credit Union, La Joya, Trinidad, on Sunday evening.

The left-handed St Lucian all-rounder helped his club to a mid-table finish in the Premier League, scoring more than 400 runs, including a century--113 against Moosai Sports--and taking 29 wickets.

The other four nominated Cricketers of the Year included PowerGen Sports Club opener Nicholas Sookdesingh, who made two centuries on his way to taking the award for scoring the most runs, 549, which helped his club win the Premier League title.

Another Central Sports player, Guyanese spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo, was also nominated for the top award after taking the most wickets, 50, while First Citizens Clarke Road United batsman Sean Siloch, who scored a century, 155 against Alescon Comets, and his teammate Mukesh Persad rounded off the top five.

The 2009 season, which was the first in the restructured Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board competitions, was declared a success by both TTCB president Deryck Murray and Eastern Credit Union (ECU) president Ronald Bobb, but Murray said more has to be done in the development of cricket in T&T.

Mathurin who is currently playing cricket in Canada, is expected back home  later this week to join the ST.Lucia  national team in training for the upcoming Winward Islands cricket tournament.
