FBI Director Wray Defends, Testifies Against Republicans

During a heated House Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Republicans barraged F.B.I. Director Christopher A. Wray with criticisms regarding his role in the investigation of former President Donald J. Trump, initiatives to combat extremist violence, and the bureau’s electronic surveillance practices.

When pressed directly on ongoing federal investigations, including those involving the former president Trump and Hunter Biden, Wray declined to comment. Republicans have criticized the president’s son Joe Biden’s recent decision to plead guilty to misdemeanor federal tax charges as a sweetheart bargain.

In sarcastic discussions with Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee, Wray refuted the GOP claim that the bureau was favoring the Biden family and called the idea that the bureau was responsible for the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, “ludicrous.” He spoke to his own upbringing when he called the notion that he harbored prejudice against conservatives “insane.”

Rep. Harriet M. Hageman, a Wyoming Republican who ousted Liz Cheney last year, accused Mr. Wray of upholding a “two-tiered” system of justice. Mr. Wray responded, “The idea that I’m biased against conservatives seems somewhat insane to me, given my own personal background.” He categorically denied that the FBI was being weaponized during prior interrogation.
