Ludwig Guttmann was born in the town of Tost, Upper Silesia, on July 3, 1899. He is the son of Dorothy and Bernard Guttmann. When Guttman was only three years old, his family moved to the Silesian City of Konigshutte.

The idea bloomed when he was helping at an accident hospital in Konigshutte in 1917. It was the first time when Lugwig Guttman saw the first paraplegic patient. The patient was a coal miner who had a spinal fracture.

Also, he died of sepsis later. In the same year, Guttman passed his Abitur from Humanistic Grammar School in Konigshutte. Later he was called up for military service. In 1917, he started his medical studies at the University of Breslau. In 1919, he transferred to the university of Freiburg. He received his Doctorate in Medicine in 1924.

In 1944, Ludwig became the head of the NSICS at Stoke Mandeville Hospital located in Aylesbury. He remained there until retiring in 1966. Guttman came up with the concept of sports for disabled people. Most importantly, he came up with early treatment for the servicemen and women who were injured.

He came up with compulsory sports activities to rehabilitate, integrate, and motivate injured people. Ludwig started an archery contest. He started a contest between 16 people. The event was held on July 29, 1948, and it coincided with the Olympic Games held in London.

The Game was named after the Stoke Mandeville games. In 1952, the event became international. Also, with Guttman’s help, the International Stoke Mandeville Games Committee was founded.
