After SpongeBob became a megahit, Stephen Hillenburg started to write a movie based on the show. He would write, direct and even produce the film himself. Eleven years later, the film “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of the Water” got released. 

In 2018, Stephen Hillenburg died while fighting a long battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as ASL.
