Donald Trump Has Been Charged With Plotting To Overturn His 2020 Election Defeat

Donald Trump Has Been Charged With Plotting

The ex-president of The United States, Donald Trump, has been charged with arranging a plot to overturn his 2020 election results. He has been charged with four such accounts, including meddling with a witness, conspiracy with citizens’ rights, and defrauding the USA.

Trump’s indictment will set up an inquiry about the events of 6th January 2021 about the riots in the US Capitol. Trump has denied all wrongdoing and is again running for the presidential seat in 2024. Trump on social media says the case against him is ‘ridiculous.’

The former president has earlier been charged with two other cases. These cases include mishandling of classified files and fabricating business records to cover up money payments made to a porn star.

This indictment investigation will focus on the two-month timeline of Trump’s actions between his defeat in the election to Joe Biden and the Washington, DC riots. Trump supporters stormed Congress when lawmakers declared the Democratic presidential candidate’s victory on 6th January 2021.

The head of the inquiry, special counsel Jack Smith says, “The attack on our nation’s capital on 6th January 2021 was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy.

“As described in the indictment it was fuelled by lies.”

Smith concluded his brief statement by saying the former president “must be assumed innocent until proven guilty” and pledged to seek “a speedy trial.” Trump is set to appear in court on 3rd August in Washington DC.

The indictment list also listed six co-conspirators, including four lawyers, a political consultant, and an official from the Department of Justice. The documents from the court accuse the former president of “conspiracy to impair, obstruct, and defeat the federal government function through dishonesty, fraud, and deceit.”

Prosecutors say, “These claims were false, and the defendant knew that they were false,” addressing Trump’s voting fraud charges on the Democratic candidate’s win in the 2020 election. Adding, “As violence ensued, the Defendant and co-conspirators exploited the disruption by redoubling efforts to levy false claims of election fraud and convince members of Congress to further delay the certification based on those claims.”
