Hulu’s Kardashian Gamble Pays Off! Most-Watched Unscripted Series On Disney-Owned Platform

Hulu's Kardashian Gamble Pays Off

Hulu’s bet on the Kardashian family has proven to be a winning move. During Disney’s earnings call on Wednesday, CEO Bob Iger revealed that “The Kardashians,” the reality series centered around the infamous family, has now claimed the title of the most-viewed unscripted series ever on Hulu.

And there’s reason to! So, if you were planning to quit Hulu without watching this, putting that plan on hold is best!

This achievement holds particular significance as Hulu considers becoming a fully Disney-owned property. This journey began over a decade ago with initial backing from major TV networks during the early days of streaming.

Despite their scandalous and high-drama reputation, the Kardashians have rapidly become a flagship series for Hulu. This is noteworthy, given the upcoming launch of a beta version of a combined Disney+ and Hulu app in December, with the official release scheduled for spring 2024.

Iger emphasized that the beta launch will allow families to set up parental controls on the app, ensuring age-appropriate content for younger audiences.

The reality series debuted on Hulu in 2022 and is currently airing its fourth season, each comprising 10 episodes. Chronicling the adventures of Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, and the entire clan, the show originated from E!’s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” which aired from 2007 to 2021. A rumored nine-figure deal marked the Kardashians’ move to Hulu, although exact figures remain undisclosed.

As Disney assumes full control of Hulu, questions arise about integrating mature content like “The Kardashians” within the family-friendly Disney brand. While Iger did not confirm the full integration of Disney+ and Hulu into one brand, industry trends suggest it could be a logical step forward.

The challenge for Disney lies in seamlessly promoting and marketing a show like “The Kardashians” alongside more family-oriented content such as Mickey Mouse cartoons and PG-13 Marvel movies. The dichotomy between the scandalous Kardashians and Disney’s squeaky-clean image is set to be an intriguing aspect as the media giant navigates its streaming landscape.

In the ever-evolving world of streaming services, Hulu’s success with “The Kardashians” underscores the diverse audience demands and the dynamic shift in content strategies within the Disney umbrella.
