Milwaukee is bracing itself for a showdown as the Republican National Committee (R.N.C.) confirms the much-anticipated first debate of the 2024 presidential primary. Although former President Donald J. Trump won’t participate, the stage is set for eight contenders vying for the spotlight. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, and political enthusiasts are eager to witness the clash of ideas and visions.
Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis, is leading the pack, a significant rival to Trump in recent polls. Former Vice President Mike Pence is prepared to present his perspective alongside him. The field boasts diverse voices, including former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who shifted from being a Trump ally to a vocal antagonist. Likewise, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, another Trump critic, secured a spot on the platform.
The debate also features Senator Tim Scott and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley, both prominent South Carolina Republicans. Political newcomer Vivek Ramaswamy and North Dakota’s Governor Doug Burgum will join these seasoned figures.
With six current or former governors, a Black candidate, two individuals born to Indian immigrants, a female candidate, and a former vice president, the Republican candidates paint a mosaic of backgrounds. Their common goal: challenging President Biden’s administration.
Leading up to the event, some candidates faced the uncertainty of meeting the R.N.C.’s requirements, including garnering 40,000 donors and achieving 1 percent in qualifying national and state polls.
Perry Johnson, businessman and erstwhile gubernatorial hopeful; Francis X. Suarez, Miami’s mayor; and Larry Elder, a radio talk-show host who unsuccessfully contested the California governorship, all fell short of the criteria. Consequently, their campaigns face an uphill battle.
The commitment to support the party’s nominee was among the R.N.C.’s prerequisites. While most contenders endorsed this pledge, former Texas Congressman Will Hurd openly refused, citing his opposition to Trump.
Although Trump’s absence from the debate is notable, the attention is expected to shift toward Governor Ron DeSantis, who has consistently polled in second place, overcoming initial hurdles.
As the political arena prepares for this critical face-off, all eyes will be on Fox News at 9 p.m. Wednesday, where moderators Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum will guide the discourse, offering a glimpse into the evolving landscape of the Republican race.
