Vikram lander finally touches the Moon as it makes a soft lunar landing on 23 August, 6:04 PM IST. The Chandrayaan-3- 3 Mission has completed its 40-day journey today, and Indians couldn’t be more proud!
The mission of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched on 14 July at Sriharikota from Sathish Dhawan Space Center has created history today. India became the first-ever country to land on the Lunar South Pole.
The landing sequence of Vikram’s lander was automatic, which started at 5.44 PM and was closely monitored by the mission controller ISTRAC. The onboard computers in the lander have been used to evaluate the conditions, and based on their successful coordination, the soft landing was successful.
The last 20 minutes were crucial as it was upto Vikram Lander to use the onboard computer systems and their logic to coordinate the soft landing. It is exactly where the Chandrayaan 2 had failed. Hence, it was a high-risk zone.
Many have highlighted this time as the “20 or 17 minutes of terror“; however, India has successfully crossed the time. Vikram Lander has ignited its engines at the right altitudes and time, making the mission successful!
India has become a member of the small club of countries, the Soviet Union, the Moon, and the United States, who have successfully managed to soft-land on the Moon with this mission.
The primary objective of this mission was to showcase the capability of doing a soft landing on the lunar surface. Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, congratulated the space scientists and Indians for this spectacular feat! “India will remember this day forever,” PM Modi said!
Scientists of the ISRO center have packed Pragyan and Vikram with instruments that will be used to function for 14 Earth days, which is one lunar day! Once the soft landing has been successful, the next step in the mission is to conduct in-situ scientific experiments.
