When To Replace Your Roof? – Read This Guide

Replace Your Roof

The roof of your house says a lot about the interior of the house. The roof is seen by all and other than serving its purpose of protecting the house from the elements, it enhances the curb appeal of your home.

A roof, therefore, needs to be in good condition so that it is both strong and appealing to look at. Strong enough to keep rain, snow, hail, and debris out and appealing enough to enhance the image of the house.

Good roofing will last anywhere from 20 to 50 years before they need replacement. The time of course depends on the type of material used for the roofing. Fibre cement shingles may last more than 25 years while copper and tile roofs are known to last more than 50 years.

Regular maintenance is definitely a must in order for a roof to last as long as expected before it requires replacement. So how do you know when to replace the entire roof and when it just needs repairs?

I live in Minneapolis and there is a Minnesota Roofing Company that I always have check my roof for any damage but over the years I have learned a thing or two about roofs.

Here are some of the signs that your roof needs replacement:

Age

Good roofing will last anywhere from 20 to 50 years before they need replacement. Fibre cement shingles may last more than 25 years while copper and tile roofs are known to last more than 50 years. Asphalt roofs tend to last 20 years. You should know when the expected lifespan of the type of roof you use and when that time comes, make plans to have it replaced. It is not convenient to wait until the roof starts falling off before you replace it. Remember leakages could cause damage to the house if left for too long.

Buckling Shingles

Buckling in shingles is seen when the shingles are not lying flat. This could be due to various reasons to the wrinkling of the roofing underlayment or the movement of the wood deck. Mostly, however, is due to the roof being worn out. When this happens, the shingles cannot protect your roof properly and should be replaced.

Stained Roof

Over time, due to exposure to elements, algae and moss may grow on the roof.  Moss degrade shingles with algae can cause damage to water. If the destruction is widespread, your roof could be settled and may need to be replaced.

Light Through The Roof

If you can see light while inside the house, say from the attic,  your roof has a ditch. This means that in case it rains, water could pass through and damage your house. This is a sign that your roof needs to be replaced.

A roof lasts for a while before needing replacement. It will need repairs in between and these should be done on time in order to have a long-lasting roof. If you see any of the above signs, ensure you consult a professional to come and have a look.
