Russian President Vladimir Putin passed a new law that is a massive setback for the Russian LGBTQ community. This legislation passed by the President puts a ban on gender and sex changes in Russia. The law is being passed to counter ‘Western Anti-Family Ideology’ in Russia.
This legislation not only bans Sex Reassignment Surgery but also bans transgender people from child adoption. This new law is said to be an attempt to protect the traditional values of Russians.
As there has been an increase in Western ideology of anti-family among the Russians, this legislation would safeguard Russia from these ideologies. But many lawmakers describe this legislation as “pure Satanism.” This act was passed by both Russian houses in the Parliament unanimously.
The law bans “medical interventions aimed at changing the sex of a person” of any kind. The law bans any public records or documents of changes of gender by a person. Only exceptions have been provided in the case of medical intervention for treating congenital anomalies.
The law also includes annulment of any marriage if a person has changed their gender. The Parliament of Russia passed its votes in favor of this bill two weeks ago. This resulted in the bill being made into a law signed by Vladimir Putin.
If reports are to be believed, Russia’s crackdown on its LGBTQ+ community started a decade ago. This was observed when Kremlin passed a law that banned public endorsements of all kinds of “nontraditional sexual relations” among the minors.
Then again, in 2020, Putin pushed for constitutional reform which outlawed the same-sex marriage, that was signed in 2022. This legislation bans “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations” between individuals. This controversial law signed on Monday has come under fire in both international and national forums.
The law states, “the state registration of a change of gender without an operation” is illegal, and this law has been put into action upon its publishing.
